This rare Kenyan purple tea is grown in the Tigania region, close to Mount Kenya, at high elevations of 1,700–2,000 metres. These conditions help produce a slow-grown leaf with a naturally rich flavour and distinctive character.  Purple teas are processed in a similar way to green tea, and boast significantly high antioxidant levels with a low caffeine content.

What makes this loose-leaf tea unique is its deep purple colour. This isn’t created during processing, but comes from a rare tea plant cultivar believed to originate from Yunnan. The large leaves are wiry with delicate tips, showing off their natural purple tones.

Purple tea is known for its high anthocyanin content, the same antioxidant compounds found in blueberries and raspberries.  This gives the tea both its colour, colour-changing abilities and its reputation as a more health-focused alternative to traditional black or green teas.  It also contains high levels of the unique polyphenol GHG, which is associated with weight management.

In terms of flavour, this is a smooth tea with notes of plum and red berries, a light body, and a clean finish with a hint of Yunnan earthiness. It’s an easy-drinking tea that works well on its own, without milk, and can also be enjoyed as a refreshing cold brew.  The addition of fresh lemon will change this infusion from a pale mauve to a bubblegum pink!
